What is GrainCorp Next?

A low-carbon initiative for the Australian grains supply chain.

GrainCorp Next is an initiative to build an end-to-end low-emission (and nature-positive) supply chain, with a specific focus on moving from discussion and theory to action and outcomes.

Importantly, for GrainCorp, the initiative seeks to identify roadblocks to meeting market expectations on sustainable standards and collaborating with partners across the supply chain to achieve this.

We’re trialling canola first, where GrainCorp operating assets can demonstrate emission reductions at every step, from farm gate through to end customer.

An end-to-end supply chain initiative

By including all aspects of the canola supply chain, we will build a real-world understanding of the difficulties and opportunities involved in creating a low-carbon supply chain.

Focus

  • Enhance understanding and accuracy of emissions sources on-farm and pre-farm.
  • Identify interventions that contribute to reducing emissions.
  • Develop commercial models that support adoption.
  • Evaluate opportunities to embrace nature initiatives in the supply chain.

Actions

  • Partner with a cohort of high performing growers.
  • Partner with end user customer(s).
  • Demonstrate emission reduction initiatives at each stage of the supply chain.
  • Measure impact on total emissions.
  • Evaluate commercial and operational impacts.
  • Assess commercial models that can support adoption.

Focus

  • Identify and demonstrate emission reduction technologies through the supply chain.
  • Continue to invest in decarbonisation of processing and refining assets.
  • Develop a verified supply chain greenhouse gas emissions model.

Actions

  • Deliver emission intensity improvements at GrainCorp’s Numurkah facility through process improvement and capital investment.
  • The Elmore grain handling site has been using an off-grid solar battery system to power the new weighbridge and sample stand.
  • GrainCorp has also purchased 8000 litres of R20 renewable diesel from Ampol for use at Elmore, initially in loaders at the site. This R20 renewable diesel is also being utilised by a road transport provider engaged to transfer canola from Elmore to Numurkah.
  • Develop a detailed emissions model for the supply chain that can be used to demonstrate the cumulative impact of emission reduction interventions and to model potential roll outs.

Focus

  • Engage like-minded organisations to build a low-emissions end-to-end supply chain.
  • Align GrainCorp Next outcomes with customer ambition and projected market access expectations.
  • Build commercial models to facilitate collaboration along the supply chain.
  • Promote achievements and lessons learnt to growers, supply chain partners and external stakeholders.

Actions

  • Scan sustainability commitments of grains and canola supply chain participants.
  • Identify providers of inputs and services to the supply chain that can support decarbonisation efforts.
  • Build collaboration models to pilot and/or adopt emission reductions.
  • Create connections to link emission reductions (and other sustainability credentials) with supply chain participants who need them.
  • Share progress through active communications.
